El año 2004 está cercano a su fin, y con el paso del tiempo algunas cosas cambian y otras permanecen igual. Quizá el público ya ha olvidado ciertas cosas que ocurrieron ayer por la tarde, como quien dice. Y ahí está el meollo de la historia. Recordar, transmitir las vivencias para que no queden olvidadas en el lento discurrir de los rápidos de la historia, desvaneciéndose como un fantasma, pasando de ser historia a mito y de ahí a leyenda…
Esto que aquí narro pasó hace un año. Recordemos. Para que no vuelva a suceder. Ni aquí ni en ningún lugar del mundo.

One hundred kilometers long, fifty kilometers wide, the island of Puerto Rico is not as big as its political importance as a juridical status model: Free Associated State. An intermediate status between independence and union with its “Godfather” and “Big Brother”: the United States of America.
First of all let’s come back in time and remember those times when sovereignty changed of hands with the indifference and the non participation of the local population: 1898 crisis. Many of the Caribbean islands were Spanish possessions. At least until the day when the weakness of the Spanish Empire was so big to make possible another Europeans nations “hunt and capture” of some of them (United Kingdom, Netherlands, France). Many of them (the majority) still remain being part of those states. But in the case of Puerto Rico, the island “resisted” being an Spanish possession. But not for much more time…

Hoy es el día en que las Naciones Unidas y lo que significa en y para el mundo está siendo atacadas por parte de las potentes organizaciones neoliberales en las que se sustenta, entre otros, el actual régimen de la administración republicana de Bush junior en los Estados Unidos de América. Es curioso que siempre se hable de Naciones Unidas como un ente casi extraterrestre. Como si fuese un ente aparte, que nada tuviera que ver con los miembros que la componen: los estados del mundo. En filmes hollywoodienses incluso se insinúa que es un jugador más del sistema internacional, con sus intrigas, servicios secretos, ejército…
El sistema de Naciones Unidas es un foro mundial donde las diferentes culturas, civilizaciones, formas de ser y ver el mundo se reúnen. No deja de ser el club de estados desde que se fundara hace casi seis décadas. Pues la estructura básica en la que se sustenta las posibles instituciones comunes del sistema de Naciones Unidas es muy pequeño y débil comparado con la magnitud del mundo. En cuanto a presupuesto consolidado de la estructura básica del sistema ONU (New York), exceptuando los organismos específicos y los programas, que desgranaré algo más adelante, seria algo inferior al del Gobierno Vasco. Estamos diciendo que el presupuesto de una organización mundial se puede comparar al de un gobierno no central de un estado europeo. Y en cuanto a funcionariado internacional señalaré que es algo inferior al del departamento de educación del Gobierno Vasco. Lo cual indica las magnitudes en las que nos movemos en relación a la capacidad de aquel sistema. El FMI y el BM poseen un presupuesto con varias decenas (incluso centenares) de ceros.

Texas. Mexico. When Spanish withdrawn from the land that Hernan Cortes conquested so easily in the early XV Century, the new nation was named Mexico. From Yucatan to the close limits of Luisiana, those lands where Mexican territories. But the recently liberated colons of the 13 colonies needed more lands to settle their families. Far away from the limes of the United States of America. On the other side of the border. And that’s the way where many Americans went to the West and South to have a new life with their relatives.
Just after the tortuous “incorporation” of the land of Luisiana in the early XIX Century to the United States through President Jefferson, this country had a border with Mexico. But it was not enough to the new nation. So many colons went to a western position. Into the state of Texas, in Mexico.

450 millones de seres humanos en el mundo responden, a grosso modo, a la descripción de “hispanos”, debido a que su lengua primordial parece ser el castellano o también llamado español (debido a su origen o el contexto en el que se quiera denominar a esta lengua latina). En Estados Unidos el auge del mundo latino está tan de actualidad que Samuel P. Huntington, famoso por su teoría del “Choque de civilizaciones”, ha escrito otra obra sobre la emergencia de América Latina sobre Estados Unidos y el posible peligro que ésta pudiera suponer a la supervivencia de la nación norteamericana tal y como la conocemos hoy (mayoritariamente blanca, protestante… WASP - White Anglo Saxon Protestant), incluyendo sus instituciones “democráticas”. Hoy por hoy son la primera minoría en el país. Superando desde el año 2000 a la minoría afroamericana. Al menos en número, puesto que aún el poder en el establishment es aún relativamente débil, en contraste con la presencia de miembros de la comunidad negra en la cúpula de la toma de decisiones: Colin Powell, Secretario de Estado y Condolezza Rice, Consejera de Seguridad Nacional. Quizá la clave es que los latinos son católicos (la Iglesia tiene dogmas específicos anti contracepción y uso del preservativo), por lo que procrean más rápidamente que sus compañeros afroamericanos o protestantes. Se estima que a mediados del siglo XXI supongan entre un 25 y un 30% de la población de Estados Unidos…

But it not remembered at all. Because it was in the far side of the world? Bali has an specific characteristic that makes it completely different from the other Indonesian islands: there lives a majority of Buddhists on it, instead of the whole “nation”, where majority is Muslim. Durante la etapa islámica en la península ibérica se dió una cierta intencionalidad de las tribus del Rif norteafricano para conquistar el autónomo califato de Córdoba. Un movimiento que, según se nos dice, tuvo su punto máximo cuando el walli de Valencia pidió la protección del Cid a mediados del siglo XI. Pero que también tiene su reflejo en el momento en el que el rey de Navarra llegó a un acuerdo sobre Albarracín con el señor musulmán de Murcia. El Rif del Norte de África ha sido una zona muy compleja en su estructuración política y en su relación con las estructuras de poder. Dado lo escarpado del terreno, en la presencia de los poderosos Atlas, las revueltas, sublevaciones y resistencias tenían mayor probabilidad de éxito. Como contrapunto siempre estaba el Norte para oponerse al Sur.

In the midway of Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean emerges from the waters a big sub continent. The second largest island on Earth (after Greenland). There is much about what we have learned, but so little about what we really know. So lets start the way to the other side (from Europe) of the world.
There was life in Australia before the Europeans went there to colonize and conquest. They were called Aborigines. And they had and specific and prolific culture, including the relationship with mother Nature and the way to transcend this world. Trough the big “pipe flutes”. They lived peacefully in an harmonic life, approximately until the early XV Century (Let me say that I have no knowledge about what happened with the possible encounters with the Australian aborigines and the North lands population or the incoming wave of Muslims along the X to XV Century …), when White “traffic” around Australia started to increase.

En el corazón de Asia, a dos pasos de la meseta de Pamir, la planicie más elevada del planeta, se encuentra Afganistán, reino de taifas hasta hace no mucho y recientemente asimilado al mundo democrático o libre gracias a… Bin Laden.
Afganistán fue conquistada por Alejandro Magno cuando dejó sus tierras macedonias (lugar de nacimiento, por cierto, de Mustafa Kemal Atatürk) a la conquista del mundo. Cuando Alejandro llegó tan al Oeste, se dice, lloró, pues no había más tierra para conquistar. Murió joven, por lo que las especulaciones sobre lo que el genial general hubiera podido hacer hasta el fin de sus días (en la escala de longevidad de aquella época) es un misterio y pasto para contrafactuales (del que este autor se declara devoto) y especulaciones diversas. Pero ese no es el asunto principal. Tras la muerte de Alejandro el Imperio que construyó se dividió entre sus generales. Y Afganistán terminó con el tiempo islamizándose, pues los otomanos siguieron la ruta alejandrina hasta llegar a “repoblar” aquellas tierras. Un ejemplo claro es Turkmenistán. La tierra de los turcomanos. La propia raíz indica el origen. Turquía.
